  • Late training slots. Field availability pushes many practices to 6–8pm, which means dinner, homework, and wind-down all get compressed into the hour or two before a reasonable bedtime.
  • Homework load. Older youth players are also often in demanding academic tracks, and homework routinely eats into the pre-bed window first.
  • Screens at bedtime. A phone or tablet in bed delays sleep onset and reduces sleep quality even when total time in bed looks adequate.
  • Weekend tournaments. Early check-in times, hotel beds, and multiple games in a day or two disrupt both duration and the consistency that makes sleep effective.
  • Overscheduling. A packed week of team training, private sessions, and games leaves fewer hours in the day, and sleep is usually what gives.

A few changes move the needle more than a hard bedtime rule that gets ignored:

Protect a consistent wake time, not just a bedtime. A fixed wake time — even on weekends — anchors the body's sleep-wake cycle more effectively than trying to enforce lights-out at a fixed hour, which is harder to control with homework and travel.

Get screens out of the bedroom an hour before sleep. This is the single highest-leverage change most households can make, and it doesn't require negotiating the training schedule at all.

Treat the evening meal as part of recovery, not an afterthought.
