How Long Is the High School Soccer Season? Dates, Games and Playoffs by State
A high school soccer season runs roughly 12 to 15 weeks from first practice to a state final in most states — but the window depends entirely on whether your state plays soccer in the fall, the winter or the spring, and the number of games varies far more than the calendar does. Maine caps a team at 14 regular-season games. Southern California allows 28. Those are both "one season."
If you are trying to work out how many Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings the next few months will cost you, the national answer is not useful, because there isn't one. The NFHS writes the playing rules; every state association writes its own calendar. So below are five real 2026-27 calendars, pulled from the state associations that publish them, and what each one actually means for a family's schedule.
How long is the high school soccer season in each state?
Each of these is taken from the association's own current soccer regulations or bulletin.
| State | Season | First practice | First game | Regular season ends | Championship | Max regular-season games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maine (MPA) | Fall | Aug 17, 2026 | Sep 3, 2026 | Oct 20, 2026 | Nov 7, 2026 | 14 |
| Ohio (OHSAA) | Fall | Aug 1, 2026 | Aug 14, 2026 | Mid-October | Nov 10–16, 2026 | 17 |
| California (CIF-SS) | Winter | On/after Nov 16 | On/after Nov 16, 2026 | Feb 3, 2027 | After section playoffs | 28 |
| Texas (UIL) | Winter–spring | Nov 30, 2026 | Dec 28, 2026 | Mar 16, 2027 (district certification) | Apr 8–10, 2027 | — |
| Tennessee (TSSAA) | Spring | Feb 15, 2027 | Mar 8, 2027 | Mid-May | May 28, 2027 | 16 |
Read the first and last rows together and the problem with "how long is the season" becomes obvious. A Maine player's entire fall — practice, 14 games, regionals, a state final — is over on November 7. A Tennessee player in the same graduating class has not started practice yet.
Three of those five calendars are not fall calendars at all. That is the single most useful thing to know before you plan anything.
When does high school soccer season start?
It depends on which of three windows your state uses.
Fall states start in August. Ohio's 2026-27 soccer regulations are about as explicit as a calendar gets: "Coaching, tryouts and instruction may begin — August 1, 2026," "First match — Friday, August 14, 2026," and "Coaching and Season end — November 17, 2026." That is a 15-week window, start to finish.
Maine runs a tighter version of the same shape. The 2026 MPA soccer bulletin lists "August 17 First Practice," "September 3 First Countable Game (After 3:00 p.m.)," "October 20 Last Countable Game," and state finals on November 7. Note the gap between those middle two dates: Maine's entire regular season is about seven weeks long.
Winter states start in November or December. The CIF Southern Section's 2026-27 soccer Blue Book states that "No interscholastic contests (non-league, tournament, or league) may be scheduled prior to November 16," and that the two permitted preseason scrimmages also "may not be held prior to November 16." Then, under the heading End of Competition: "All competition must end on or before Wednesday, February 3." Section playoffs, SoCal Regionals and a State Championship follow after that.
Texas sits between winter and spring. UIL's published 2026-2027 soccer dates — labelled tentative, with "All dates, times, and materials are subject to change" — give November 30 as the first day for practice, December 11 for scrimmages, December 28 for games, and a state final on April 8–10. First whistle to last is about 19 weeks, the longest of the five.
Spring states start after the new year. The 2026-27 TSSAA sports calendar puts Tennessee's first practice date at February 15, 2027, the first contest on March 8, 2027, and Division I state championships on May 28, 2027.
Several states also split by gender — boys in one window, girls in another — so the answer can differ for two children in the same house. Your state association's soccer page is the only authority here.
How many games are in a high school soccer season?
This is where the published caps diverge much more sharply than the dates:
- Maine: "A MAXIMUM of fourteen regular season games may be played," plus five exhibition dates.
- Ohio: "Regular season contests permitted — 17," plus a "Maximum of five scrimmages."
- Tennessee: "Maximum number of regular season contests is 16 matches. Maximum of two tournaments with each tournament counting as two matches."
- California (Southern Section): "A soccer team will be permitted to play no more than 28 games during the season, including tournaments, but excluding CIF Southern Section playoffs."
Now divide by the weeks, because that number is what you actually feel:
| State | Games | Regular-season weeks | Games per week |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maine | 14 | ~7 | ~2 |
| Ohio | 17 | ~9 | ~1.8 |
| Tennessee | 16 | ~10 | ~1.6 |
| California (SS) | 28 | ~11 | ~2.5 |
That is the defining feature of a high school season: dense rather than long. It is also why the fitness a player brings to tryouts tends to decide their minutes — there is very little training time between fixtures in which to build any.
If your child plays both, that density is exactly where the two calendars collide, and we work through the trade-offs in club soccer vs high school soccer. For the clock inside a single match — 80 minutes, two 40-minute halves, and a scoreboard that counts down and stops — see how long a high school soccer game is.
How long do the playoffs add?
Between two and five weeks, and the structure is published well in advance.
Ohio's soccer calendar lays out the whole bracket: Sectional October 19–24, District October 26–31, Regional November 3–8, State November 10–16, with the season officially ending November 17. A team that loses its sectional opener is done in mid-October. A team that reaches the state final plays four more weekends.
Maine compresses the same idea into just over two weeks: regional preliminaries on October 23–24, quarterfinals October 27–28, semifinals October 30–31, regional finals November 3–4, state finals November 7.
Texas stretches it out: district certification on March 16, bi-district March 18–20, then area, regional, state semifinals April 1–3 and state finals April 8–10. Three-plus weeks of knockout soccer.
So "how long is the season" has two honest answers: the length if your team's run ends early, and the length if it doesn't. Plan for the first and hope for the second.
How much of the season does one player actually play?
Some states cap the individual, not just the team — and this is the limit most families have never heard of.
Ohio's regulations state: "A player shall not be permitted to participate in more than three halves during any one day with a total of 42 halves for the season." Forty-two halves is 21 full games.
Do the arithmetic on a starter. Seventeen regular-season games played end to end is 34 halves. That leaves eight halves — four full games — for a tournament run. A player who never comes off in September can genuinely run short of eligible halves in November, which is one of the quieter reasons coaches pull starters out of a 5–0 game.
The participation cap is also the reason to take a hard look at the whole year rather than the season in isolation. The caps and rest guidance that apply across the calendar, including the published figures on how many weeks a year a young athlete should be fully off, are in our guide to how long a youth soccer season is.
What to do with the weeks after it ends
For most fall states, the answer to "how long is the season" is really a countdown: by mid-November it is over, and the next organised soccer — club spring league, a winter indoor block, next August's tryouts — is weeks or months away.
That gap is where high school seasons are won, because nobody arrives at a seven-week, 14-game schedule and gets fit during it.
- Take two or three real weeks completely off. Treat them as recovery, not as a training block.
- Then protect technical work, not fitness. Fitness comes back quickly. First touch, weak foot and ball mastery do not, and they decay fastest in an off-season spent indoors.
- Keep it short and frequent. Fifteen minutes in a driveway four times a week beats one long Sunday session, and it is the model FlickTec's guided daily sessions are built on.
- Work backwards from tryouts. If your state's first practice is August 1, a 12-week build starting in May is a plan; a scramble in late July is not.
Our off-season training guide breaks that down week by week.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the high school soccer season?
Roughly 12 to 15 weeks from first practice to a state final in most states, though Texas's published 2026-27 calendar spans about 19 weeks. The regular season itself is much shorter — about seven weeks in Maine, nine to eleven in Ohio, Tennessee and Southern California — with playoffs adding two to five weeks on top for teams that advance.
How many games are in a high school soccer season?
It depends on the state association's cap, and the range is wide. Maine permits a maximum of 14 regular-season games, Tennessee 16 regular-season matches plus up to two tournaments counting as two matches each, Ohio 17, and the CIF Southern Section allows "no more than 28 games during the season, including tournaments, but excluding CIF Southern Section playoffs."
When does high school soccer season start?
In fall states, August — Ohio permits coaching and tryouts from August 1, 2026 and a first match on August 14, while Maine's first practice is August 17 and first countable game September 3. In winter states it starts far later: the CIF Southern Section bars any contest before November 16, and Texas's tentative UIL calendar begins practice on November 30. Spring states start after the new year, with Tennessee's first practice set for February 15, 2027.
Is high school soccer a fall or spring sport?
Both, depending on where you live. Of the five 2026-27 calendars above, two are fall (Ohio, Maine), two are winter or winter-into-spring (California, Texas) and one is spring (Tennessee). Some states also run boys and girls in different windows, so check your own association rather than assuming the sport sits where it does in the state you moved from.
How long is the middle school soccer season?
Usually the same window as high school but with a lower game cap. Ohio's regulations for grades 7 and 8 set the same August 14 first match and November 17 season end as the varsity calendar, but permit "14 plus 1 postseason tournament not to exceed 4 games" and only two scrimmages. Match length is shorter too — we cover that in how long middle school soccer games are.
The reason "how long is the high school soccer season" has no clean answer is that the season is a state-level decision, not a national one. What is consistent across every calendar above is the shape: a short, dense block of games with very little room to improve mid-season, bookended by months in which nothing is scheduled at all. The families who get the most out of it treat those months as the real season.
